3 March 2018 What About The DREAMERS?

What About The DREAMERS?

The issue of the Dreamers brings up strong opinions on both sides of the political spectrum.  My belief is these kids at least deserve a green card with a way towards citizenship.  The majority of them came here as young kids.  They were just going where their parents went.  They did not have a vote in it.  Also, for the vast majority this is their home.  This is where they grew up.  This is where their friends are.

You can say all you want that they did not come into the USA legally. I don’t disagree with that fact.  However, that is not the end all be all reason for having them deported.

I strongly believe a country needs to have borders and a process to come here legally.  There needs to be consequences, sometime severe looking ones, for adults who came here illegally.  I also understand there are millions of jobs that’s are fulfilled by non-legal people because US citizens won’t do them.  That is another issue.  The kids of the people are the issue.

I want Dreamers to have green cards.  If they have clean records for 5 years after high school, then they can apply for citizenship.  If they commit a felony or a “serious enough” misdemeanor, then after they serve whatever sentence is handed them they get deported.  They had their chance to stay and they chose a path that lost it.

Even though I want protected borders, I also want compassion and empathy for kids who only want the chance to stay here.  They have the same hopes and aspirations as any kid who was born here.  We should keep the fires within them burning bright with optimism and have them know they can stay to live life as they want.  Turning our back on them is not consistent with moral values.  There are times when moral values outweigh current laws. This is one of them.
