20 Jan 2018 Do The Right Thing?

Would You Do The Right Thing?

A lot of people say they would do the right thing but when it came time to really do it, would they, would you, would I?

Would you risk your life for stranger? Would you interject in a situation that has a high degree of physical harm to you? Would you take a stand at work that leads to you walking away from it, knowing you can’t get a job with the same income and it may force you to move or downsize?

Would you do the right thing at work if it meant a big change to your spouse and family?   Would you do the right thing if you knew it would add so much stress to the marriage that it may end?  What is your first responsibility, doing the right thing to help someone else or what is best for your family?  Does family really come first?

Would you let racial slurs or demeaning words or actions towards women slide at work because the boss did it and you know it would be very hard to address, especially if you were the only one who heard or saw them?

Everybody has a moral compass. Your do the right thing may not be someone else’s do the right thing. If family we’re truly first, you may let slide at work words or actions that you knew were wrong but you are not willing to take the chance on confronting it.  Your do the right thing with family first.

Doing the right thing is not as easy as it sounds. There are consequences for actions. Those consequences could be large. Unless you have been put in a similar position and you did the right thing as you know it, I would think twice about criticizing someone who chose to do something different than you.

Yes, I would hope people would do the right thing even if it were difficult. However, there are a lot of factors involved in a decision and until you know them all it is best do not pass judgment.

Have you thought about how you would react if you had to do the right thing? Right might not be easy. How strong is your moral compass and pointing in the right direction?
