How Long Should A Woman Have A Right To Choose?
I know the basic premise of this question is controversial.
Many people believe that life begins at conception and the woman does not have
a choice with respect to having an abortion.
Saying that someone is pro abortion is not framing it in the
right terms. I don’t think anyone looks at the actual abortion as a positive.
The argument to me comes down to at what point does a woman not have a right to
abort her pregnancy.
The basis for my position on this issue is in lieu of
extraordinary medical intervention, when can the baby sustain itself on his or
her own. With that in mind a woman can choose to terminate her pregnancy up to
the end of the second trimester.
During the first trimester the woman could terminate without
any questions or delay. During the second trimester the woman should wait 24
hours after scheduling the procedure.
During the third trimester an abortion would only be
performed after a medical determination that it was life-threatening for the
woman to continue and the woman consented to the procedure.
The issue of pro-choice or not defines which side of the
political spectrum you are on. Currently
you could not be supported by the two main political parties if your position
on this issue was not in line. Also,
this issue is the number one criteria for a Supreme Court justice nominee. If
the Democrats had a majority in the Senate and nominee was pro-life, he or she
would not get confirmation. Reverse the situation and the same result would be
true. Each side would claim that the nominee is not in the mainstream thinking
on this issue.
I don’t see an end to
this divide. There does not seem to be any way to compromise. Pro-life believes
life begins at conception and under no circumstance is an abortion allowed.
Even if the pregnancy was a result of rape or incest, hard line pro-life
believers would not allow an abortion. The hard line pro-choice crowd believes
on abortion should be allowed up until the very end of the third trimester.
Even the moderate pro-life and pro-choice positions can’t seem to find common
ground.
My position would not be acceptable to the pro-life side of
the argument. Likewise many on the pro-choice side would not accept my
position.
I do believe a woman has a right to choose. However, it does
come with some conditions. I am not saying I am right and anyone is wrong but
it is just where I stand on this controversial issue.
